IRS Delay for 2010 Filing

January 6th, 2011

Due to recent tax law changes, the IRS wants certain taxpayers to wait until late February to file their returns.

The following taxpayers are affected:

  • Itemized Filers
  • Taxpayers claiming higher education and fees deductions
  • Filers who claim educator expense deduction
  • Those who claim the state and local sales tax deduction

We will keep you posted with any changes!

Turning Your Business Around

August 12th, 2010

The economic “pearl harbor” as Warren Buffett has called it, has been no doubt a challenge for business owners.  They have caused several challenges for all businesses.  Individuals and businesses are no longer spending indiscriminately, known as conspicuous consumption.   Everyone has been making adjustments.  Businesses have to adjust too.

As a member of Principa, a group of CPA firms looking to add as much value as we can, we at JMP + Co believe the following tips will help your business address the current challenges.

Read the attached file on Long-term business success through tough times.

We can help implement and address these challenges.

The Launch Pad, a guide to the start-up business

July 13th, 2010

Most everyone dreams of making it big by starting their own business. We all want to live our life as we desire it to be lived. In my opinion, everyone should be able to go after that dream if they choose to.

In my life, I have worked for small businesses and large businesses. But I have always wanted to own my own business, which I finally dove head first into that pool in 2007 when Michael Peterson and I bought Dale Johnson’s CPA firm in Buffalo, MN. I tried of couple start-ups on my own and have been closely involved with friends and family as they ventured into the ever changing maze of the business world (I helped my wife start and grow her business also, Sara Mattson Skin Therapy, Inc). Primarily though, I have been dealing with start-ups as an advisor in my professional life as a CPA for almost 15 years now. During that time, nothing gives me a thrill like helping someone start-up and create a successful business.

To me it is the essence of everything American: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is why, again, I believe everyone should go after that dream any time they get the chance.

Now, as wonderful and fun as starting a business can be, it can also be as draining and frustrating too. That’s the reason I am creating The Launch Pad. The goal is to know the frustrations BEFORE they happen, and help the owner continue to be able to focus on his or her best purpose with regards to the business. Once most people know what is coming they can deal with it. Unknown or surprise issues are the ones that can be too overwhelming and take the focus away from operating the business. I aim to lay out a path from my perspective as a CPA, along with input from other professions and services (e.g.: marketing/web/social media, legal, banking).

To remove those frustrations, we need to expose what they could be and come up with paths to get around, over, or under them. So when they arrive, the business owner knows what to do. I will post over the next few weeks my thoughts on the following topics in regards to the start-up experience:

  • Goals and Objectives of a Start-up Business
  • Structure of the Business
  • Funding and Financing the Start-up Business
  • Tax Strategies
  • Risk Management
  • Investments and Retirement Planning
  • Estate Planning

I will also cover several side topics such as payroll and sales tax issues and processes, filing tax returns and how the new business will change your current filing process.

I look forward to being of assistance to anyone who wants to “put out a shingle” and start the journey.
